Relationships, sex, health and economic education
At Glenwood School, RSHE is taught from Year 7 through to Year 11. The guidelines from the National Curriculum forms the basis of how we teach RSHE at Glenwood. Even though much of ‘Living in the wider world’ is not included in statutory requirements, the theme as a whole remains vitally important for pupils’ personal development and economic wellbeing, as well as in supporting schools to meet benchmarks for careers education as part of the DfE Careers Strategy.
RSHE education addresses both pupils’ current experiences and preparation for their future. Our Programme of Study provides a sequenced and spiral curriculum to develop knowledge, skills and attributes, where prior learning is revisited, reinforced and extended year on year.
The curriculum follows three broad areas – Personal Development, Health and Relationships and Sex Education. In addition in years 7 and 11 pupils will cover aspects of transition in more detail.
At Key Stage 3 pupils build on the knowledge and understanding, skills and attributes and values they have acquired and developed during the primary phase. RSHE education acknowledges and addresses the changes that young people experience, beginning with transition to secondary school, the changes of adolescence and their increasing independence. It teaches the knowledge and skills which will equip them for opportunities and challenges of life. Pupils learn to manage diverse relationships, their online lives, and the increasing influence of peers and the media.
At Key Stage 4, pupils deepen knowledge and understanding, extend and rehearse skills, and further explore attitudes, values and attributes acquired during Key Stage 3. RSHE education reflects the fact that pupils are moving towards an independent role in adult life, taking on greater responsibility for themselves and others.
Important themes such as sexual harassment, sexual violence and coercive relationships as well as the dangers posed by Child Sexual Exploitation and Child Criminal Exploitation are covered in an age and stage appropriate way.
